St. Mary's Basilica, officially known as the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a prominent Gothic church located in the heart of Kraków, Poland, in the main market square (Rynek Główny). It is one of the city's most iconic landmarks and a significant example of Polish Gothic architecture. The basilica's origins date back to the 13th century, although the current structure was largely completed in the 14th century. It is renowned for its impressive brick facade and two striking towers of unequal height. The taller of the two towers, known as the Hejnalica, stands at about 80 meters and serves as a watchtower. Every hour, a trumpet signal, known as the Hejnał Mariacki, is played from this tower, a tradition that commemorates a 13th-century trumpeter who was shot while sounding the alarm before a Mongol attack. Inside, St. Mary's Basilica is famous for its stunning wooden altarpiece, crafted by the German sculptor Veit Stoss (Wit Stwosz) in the late 15th century. This masterpiece is considered one of the greatest examples of Gothic art in Europe, featuring intricately carved figures and scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The basilica's interior is richly decorated with vibrant polychrome murals, stained glass windows, and a starry blue ceiling, all contributing to its breathtaking beauty. The church also houses several chapels, each adorned with unique artworks and historical artifacts. St. Mary's Basilica plays an important role in Kraków's cultural and religious life, hosting numerous religious ceremonies and events throughout the year. It is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors who come to admire its architectural splendor and historical significance.
