The peacock is a large and colorful bird known for its iridescent plumage and striking tail feathers. It belongs to the pheasant family, Phasianidae, and is native to South Asia, though it has been introduced to various parts of the world. The term "peacock" technically refers to the male of the species, while the female is called a peahen, and together they are known as peafowl. Peacocks are most famous for their extravagant tail feathers, which they fan out in a display to attract mates. These feathers feature eye-like patterns and can span over five feet in length. The vibrant colors of a peacock's feathers are due to microscopic structures that reflect light, rather than pigments. There are three main species of peafowl: the Indian Peafowl, the Green Peafowl, and the Congo Peafowl. The Indian Peafowl is the most well-known and is often associated with cultural and religious symbolism, especially in India where it is the national bird. Peafowl are omnivorous, feeding on a diet that includes seeds, insects, small mammals, and reptiles. They are ground-dwelling birds that prefer open forests and farmland habitats. Despite their size and the cumbersome appearance of their tails, peafowl are capable of flight, although they typically only fly short distances to escape predators or to roost in trees. In addition to their visual displays, peacocks are known for their loud calls, which can be heard over long distances. These calls play a role in communication and territory establishment. Peafowl have been kept by humans for centuries, both for their beauty and as status symbols. They are often found in parks, zoos, and private estates around the world.
