El Capitan is a prominent granite monolith located in Yosemite National Park, California. It is one of the most famous landmarks in the park and a popular destination for rock climbers from around the world. Standing at about 3,000 feet (approximately 900 meters) from base to summit, it is one of the tallest exposed granite cliffs in the world. El Capitan is situated on the north side of Yosemite Valley, near the western end. The rock formation is renowned for its sheer vertical face, which presents a significant challenge to climbers. The first successful ascent was made in 1958 by Warren Harding, Wayne Merry, and George Whitmore, who took 47 days using fixed ropes and siege tactics. Today, El Capitan is a popular site for both traditional and free climbing, with routes like "The Nose" being particularly famous. "The Nose" was first climbed in 1958 and remains one of the most iconic climbing routes globally. In recent years, climbers like Alex Honnold have gained fame for free soloing El Capitan, climbing without ropes or safety gear. Beyond climbing, El Capitan is also a popular spot for sightseeing and photography. Its massive, imposing presence is a favorite subject for photographers, especially during sunrise and sunset when the light creates dramatic effects on the granite surface. Visitors to Yosemite National Park often stop at El Capitan Meadow to take in the view and appreciate the grandeur of this natural wonder.
